PLEIN AIR

Southwest

This type of painting required me to learn how to show a whole new landscape.  I went to the James Museum and sketched some pictures by Maynard Dixon.  This was to get the feel of this rugged terrain. When I paint plein air, I try to get the feel of a specific place that include the plants that grow there.

Harding Mine-Dixon Area

12” x 18

This is outside the town of Dixon. There is an old mine you can explore (Harding Mine),  I was surprised and pleased that people recognized it.

Harding Mine

5” x 5

This is a miniature. Only 5” x 5”.

Outside My Brother’s Window

12” x 18

My Brother’s House has large glass windows. It looks out on wonderful grasses, scrub oak and some pines in the distance

Arroyo Seco Pasture

15” x 20

When I stayed in Arroyo Seco, I painted this pasture.  I paid attention to the flowers there at this time of year and the changing color of the mountains.

Palo Duro Canyon

10” x 15

When I drive to New Mexico, I like to stop at a canyon in Texas and stay at the cow cabins at the bottom of the canyon. When the sun sets you can see it through breaks in the canyon walls.
